Our driver-in-the-loop (DIL) simulators and Panthera Software Suite are designed to slot into customers’ existing tool chains so their engineers can be up and running quickly with a future-proof system that does not tie them to any one supplier. Having recognized the potential of engineering simulators to save time and money through DIL testing since the 1990s, we have installed over 100 driving simulators globally and gained a firm reputation as a trustworthy simulator expert.

All our simulators use our direct drive force feedback steering system, a purposely designed, multi-turn actuator for high-speed steering wheel applications.  These are purposely designed, single or multi-turn actuators for high-fidelity steering wheel applications, featuring double loop control, which optimally recreates the torque demanded by the vehicle model. At a bandwidth exceeding 50 Hz, the maximum peak torque is 30 Nm, the nominal maximum torque is 20 Nm and the maximum velocity is 4500 deg/s.

 

When motion is required, most customers use our standard industrial 6-DOF motion bases with either 400 or 640 mm actuator stroke, as used in professional automotive, motorsport and military simulator applications around the world.
 

We offer a range of simulator platforms and seating and interface frames to allow the incorporation of mock-ups, cockpits, race tubs or partial/complete vehicles. An Interchangeable Driver Cell (IDC) option allows for a 20 minute changeover of different mock-ups. See page 4 of our automotive brochure and motorsport brochure for more details.

 

We have many years’ experience integrating original vehicle components such as shifting devices, pedal boxes, steering wheels or complete dashboards – working with CAN-Bus interfaces. Add-ons include active brake pedals, seat belt loaders and vibration devices.

All our simulators run on the Cruden Panthera software suite, which integrates perfectly with existing simulator hardware and HIL or SIL configurations. Panthera is now also available as a stand-alone desktop simulator application and for use with any motion system. For more detailed information, consult our software brochure.

 

Panthera uses high-end physics and an excellent rendering engine. It contains controllers for motion platforms, steering feedback, pedals, dashboard, audio etc. as well as a scripting engine to define and customize the simulation.

 

Panthera simulator software features include:

 

  • Panthera Master – This is the main module of the simulator system. It times and controls the simulation, performs several monitoring tasks and executes interface liaison jobs for and between modules.
  • Session Manager - The main GUI for operating the simulator. Operators can set up a simulation by selecting a car, road and vehicle set-up. Once configured, a session can be controlled with a single mouse click for all hard and software modules involved.
  • ePhyse – This is a generic interface package that enables the use of (custom built) simulation models over a network. The default implementation is based on SIMULINK library extensions to control the configuration and state of the vehicle model that resides on the real time platform. Integrating dedicated vehicle dynamics packages, such as VI-CarRealTime, IPG Carmaker, CarSim, SIMPACK, VeDYNA, dSPACE ASM, AVL VSM, Dymola, is simple and straightforward through the ePhyse module. 
  • Motion cueing & control loading force feedback interface and customization.
  • Platform tracking – with off-board projection systems, the motion platform position and orientation is tracked and the projected images adjusted accordingly. This can also be combined with head and/or eye-tracking.
  • Edge blending and warping – a built-in module that compensates for distortion when projecting onto an arbitrary shape surface. It also smoothly blends the edges of each area where projections overlap.
  • Panthera SISTer (Server for Interaction with Surfaces & Terrains) – this software determines how the tire contact patch interacts with the road either by multisampling with up to 49 intersection queries per wheel, or by driving directly on a dense point set with a spatial density down to 10 mm. This is done at a frequency of 1000 Hz or higher without additional computational costs to the vehicle model and with a latency of less than 2 ms.
  • Spectator view – TV-like coverage that enables engineers and spectators to follow the vehicle from different angles or through in-car camera coverage.
  • Data logging / Telemetry Analysis – for both your automotive simulator and your racing simulator, vehicle performance can be evaluated as the simulator runs. The  data can also be exported and loaded into various data formats, including Matlab or telemetry packages such as Motec, Darab, Wintax or Pi Toolbox.
  • Panthera Set-up Tool – For Cruden developed vehicle models, as well as Simulink compatible vehicle models, engineers can change almost all vehicle settings from a GUI, most of which at runtime. 
  • GPS Tracker – the live timing package of the Panthera simulation environment. It shows a track map with the driver's position on the virtual track, as well as (sector and total) times during a stint.
  • Interface to traffic and scenarios

 

In June 2016, we launched Panthera Free, a free version of our Panthera software suite. 

 Vehicle modeling

Cruden creates content for real-time simulators and has built up a library of virtual roads, test and race tracks from around the world.

 

The team has developed a skip pad with various circles at either 30, 50, 70, 90, 110, 130 m or 20, 40, 60, 80 , 100, 120 radii as well as multiple endless highways (3 or 5 lane) with various ISO lane changes: Dual Lane Change (ISO 3888-1) configuration, also known as the “Moose Test”, Object Avoidance (ISO 3888-2) configuration and more. Cruden can build any customer configuration.

  

The use of full Lidar scanned data provides the most accurate, reliable representation.

 

Cruden takes care of the complete task – from scanning the road, through post-processing data and applying filters to building the road model. This process requires scarce and specialist know-how, all contained within our in-house team.

 Screens, projectors and audio

Cruden makes simulator systems with integrated TFT displays as well as on- and off-board projection systems with both mono and stereo projection using various technologies available on the market (Infitec, active shutter glasses and more). All driving simulators come with digital audio, with latency as low as 8 ms.

 

A popular choice of projection system uses an off-board, conical screen with a diameter of 6-8 m that facilitates the use of only three projectors for a horizontal view of more than 180°.

 

Cruden completes a projector study for every customer to optimize the layout and locations of simulator screens and projectors.

We have recently entered the professional marine market with the launch of our new training simulator for high speed boat handling, navigation and safety to set a new training standard for offshore, coastguard, naval, search and rescue, as well as security and control applications.

 

Our 6-DOF simulators combine real boat hardware with professional image generation as well as wave and boat dynamic modelling techniques transferred from the motorsport and automotive sectors. This means we can provide the highest levels of accuracy and realism.

 

Our motion simulator with shock-mitigating seat is available in a range of boat types and with various on- or off-board projection system options.  Operated by one or two people (helmsman and navigator), we provide seamless integration of standard equipment (SIMRAD, Raymarine, Furuno etc.) and offer full AAR capabilities. The simulator’s open architecture system allows the use of common communication and navigation equipment such as ECDIS, AIS, ARPA and VHF etc. and has comprehensive content features including night time,  weather, realistic lighting of buoys, ships, and landmarks.

System latency

Cruden racing and driving simulators' full ‘round-trip’ perceived visual latency is industry leading at just below 10 ms. The end-to-end latency from the driver generating an input to the driver receiving feedback on the control loading is only 7 ms. Audio latency is as low as 8 ms. 

 

Frequency response

The bandwidth of Cruden’s motion bases exceeds 20 Hz in all 6-DOF. The bandwidth for heave and rotational degrees of freedom goes beyond 40 Hz, whilst maintaining a latency of less than 10 ms. The control loading bandwidth exceeds 50 Hz.

 

Visual performance

Panthera can render at resolutions up to WQXGA (2560 x 1600), keeping frame rates above 120 fps.

 

Soft or hard real-time

Cruden vehicle simulators run dynamic models and controllers on various hard- or soft real-time platforms.

Third party vehicle dynamics packages, such as Vi-Grade, IPG CarMaker, veDYNA, CarSim, Dymola, dSPACE ASM or SIMPACK can easily be integrated through Panthera’s ePhyse module. The models run natively, in co-simulation, through their Simulink S-functions.

 

For motorsport simulator applications, Cruden has developed its own highly detailed Simulink vehicle model, Panthera CSVM. For additional performance, this model can be compiled through Simulink Coder and either run on the Master PC or on a separate machine in both a hard or soft real-time environment.

 

Panthera SISTer

Cruden has developed Panthera SISTer (Server for Interaction with Surfaces & Terrains) that enhances tire models by determining how the tire contact patch interacts with the road. This can be done either by multisampling with up to 49 intersection queries per wheel, or by driving directly on a dense point set with a spatial density down to 10 mm. This is done at a frequency of 1000 Hz or higher. 

 

This method provides highly improved input to the tire model, resulting in detailed and precise forces and moments, plus road-normal calculations, without additional computational costs to the vehicle model. The interaction between the vehicle model and Panthera SISTer has a latency of less than 2 ms and uses a predictive algorithm to compensate for these delays.
